Cirque Du Soleil on ice – Experience Crystal

One of the newest touring shows by Cirque du Soleil is Crystal. What makes it so different from others? It takes place on ice. The ice did make me curious about how any of the traditional aerial elements might need to be changes as well as how it would work out so getting a chance to see it on opening night was a welcome invitation.

Cirque Du Soleil’s Crystal show description:
Follow Crystal, our lead character, on an exhilarating tale of self-discovery as she dives into a world of her own imagination. Feel the adrenaline as she soars through this surreal world at high speed to become what she was always destined to be: confident, liberated, empowered.

Crystal is the 42nd Cirque Du Soleil production. This is the first one I’ve seen since watching Quidam a few years ago. This is my 4th Cirque Du Soleil show. It is always more of my favorites. I wasn’t sure about the ice element but it worked amazingly well. While the aerials seems to be contained to 2 major scenes with a no ring act, the ice elements still made for a cohesive and fun show. The best part to me were the hockey players. The ramp stunts and one of the few colorful parts of a very cold (intentionally) and blue/white/grey show made for a burst of color when other elements were intentionally subtle.

This is definitely a family show but also something those of us that grew up watching Ice Capades would also enjoy. They really put a great amount of work into weaving the ice into the entire show. There is still juggling and chair balancing plus some more contemporary music intertwined into the soundtrack.

Crystal is currently playing at PNC Arena in Raleigh until August 19th and will be at Greensboro Coliseum August 22-26, 2018.
