You probably know her as the woman singing on Grammy award winning single Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Mary Lambert’s new album Heart on my Sleeve which was released on October 14th brings her into the fold and into the memories of others. I got a chance to listen to her album prior to its release and have spending about 2 weeks with it its a rather interesting album.

Heart on My Sleeve reads like the diary of a woman who has been broken. This isn’t the break up album or girl power anthem this is “I’m hurt, You broke me”. Songs Rib Cage are meant for you to fear the raw emotion. Mary even moves into a cover of one of my favorite songs Jessies’s Girl by Rich Springfield. Instead of the rocking song I frequently car dance to its a slow ballad to make you feel its a longing song of hurt not a powerful song of want. With more like title track Heart On My Sleeve its just more pouring out the emotion. One thing that really doesn’t  work for me is her spoken work moments, they don’t feel powerful. I did still find myself repeatedly playing When You Sleep, Chasing The Moon and Monochromatic were quickly added to my music library. Monochromatic in fact is one of those songs that just really works for me.
